Craps looks intimidating — 30+ bet types, fast action, table layout that looks like a math exam. The reality: only 4–5 of those bets matter, and if you stick to them, you're playing a near-fair game. Online craps has the advantage of going at your own pace, with the same odds you'd get at a Vegas table.
Pass Line + Odds — the only bets you need
The Pass Line bet has a 1.41% house edge. The 'Odds' bet behind it pays true odds (no house edge). Combined, a Pass Line + 5x Odds bet has an effective house edge of 0.33% — the lowest of any bet in the casino. Ignore everything else on the table.
How a craps round works
The shooter rolls. On the come-out roll: 7 or 11 wins Pass; 2, 3 or 12 loses; any other number becomes the 'point.' If a point is set, the shooter rolls until they hit the point (Pass wins) or roll a 7 (Pass loses). Once a point is established you can place an Odds bet behind your Pass — true odds, no house edge.
Bets to avoid
Big 6 / Big 8 (9.09% edge), Field (5.56% on most layouts), Hard Ways (9–11%), Any Seven (16.67%). They look fun. They're terrible. The casino designs them to look juicy precisely because they're the highest-edge bets on the table.
Don't Pass — the contrarian play
Don't Pass is essentially the inverse of Pass. House edge is 1.36% — slightly better. Same Odds bet behind. The downside: socially, you're betting against the table at a live craps game. Online, no one cares. If you're playing solo, Don't Pass is technically the best line.
