Texas Hold'em Online Poker

The most popular poker variant on Earth — and the one most online sites center their lobbies around. Two hole cards, five community cards, four betting rounds, and unlimited skill ceiling.

Texas Hold'em is the variant that built modern poker. Its appeal is the layered decision tree — pre-flop, flop, turn, river — combined with the visible community cards that let you build narratives about opponents' hands. It's the standard variant for the WSOP Main Event, the World Poker Tour, and virtually every online poker lobby.

How a hand plays

Each player gets two private 'hole' cards. Then five community cards are revealed in stages: the flop (three cards), the turn (one card), and the river (one card). After each stage, players bet, call, raise or fold. The best 5-card poker hand using any combination of your two hole cards and the five community cards wins.

Pre-flop, the small blind and big blind force action. Players in late position act last on every postflop street — a major structural advantage.

Hand rankings (best to worst)

Royal Flush > Straight Flush > Four of a Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > Three of a Kind > Two Pair > One Pair > High Card. Most pots are won with one pair or worse — don't wait for monsters before you play hands.

Position-based starting hands

Under the gun: top 12-15% — high pairs (AA-99), AK, AQ, KQ suited. Middle position: top 18-22%. Cutoff: top 25-30%. Button: top 40-45%. Small blind: defend smartly against opens.

Postflop fundamentals

1. Continuation bet selectively. The c-bet was once near-automatic; modern solvers tell us to check more often, especially on coordinated boards.

2. Bet sizing tells a story. Small bets (1/3 pot) on dry boards can fold out wide ranges; big bets (3/4 pot+) on wet boards protect strong hands.

3. Hand reading is the master skill. Build hand-range hypotheses based on opponents' actions, not their cards.

4. Don't bluff stations. The single most expensive mistake at low stakes is bluffing players who never fold.
