Texas Hold'em Strategy: Pre-flop Ranges

Hold'em strategy starts with pre-flop hand selection by position. The single biggest leak in low-stakes games is playing too many hands from early position.

Position matters more than you think

Late position acts last on every postflop street. You see opponents' actions before deciding. Tight ranges from early position; wide ranges from button.

Position-based ranges

Under the gun: top 12-15% (high pairs, AKs, AKo, AQs).

Middle position: top 18-22%.

Cutoff: top 25-30%.

Button: top 40-45%.

Postflop fundamentals

  • Continuation bet selectively, not always
  • Bet sizing tells a story — small bets fold out wide ranges; big bets protect strong hands
  • Don't bluff stations (passive callers)
  • Hand reading is the master skill

Bankroll

Cash games: 25 buy-ins for the stake you play. Drop down at 5-buy-in losses. See full bankroll guide.

FAQ

Does this strategy guarantee profit?

No casino game can be beaten long-term except blackjack (with card counting), video poker (with full-pay tables), and certain forms of poker. Strategy reduces house edge but doesn't eliminate it for most games.

Where should I practice?

Use free-play / demo modes at any major regulated casino. Our casino reviews note which operators offer demo play.
