Overview of Snooker Games

Snooker is a game played on a billiard table between two people. Twenty-two total balls are used: fifteen red, six of various other colors and one cue ball. Each color ball has a different point value. The premise of Snooker is to score more points than the other player. This is achieved primarily by using a cue stick to hit the cue ball and, in turn, hit one of the object balls. Six pockets are featured around the rectangular table, one in each corner and then one on either side of the table in the center. Balls are hit into these pockets, and points are awarded accordingly.

History of Snooker

Billiards dates its origins to England during the 1500s. This was considered to be a gentleman’s game because it was widely played among royalty. At that time, balls made of ivory were hit into holes of the playing table. These fell straight to the ground because pockets had not yet been developed. Players only used three balls per game.

Snooker was created in the late 1800s while the British Armed Forces were stationed in India. There, various versions of billiards were developed. In 1885, John Roberts, who was the British Billiards Champion at that time, traveled to India and learned to play snooker. He introduced the game to England after his return.
